The day begins with the departure from the meeting point towards the beginning of the trail, crossing the island from the south to the north by the narrowest part. After passing through the only city on the north coast, Ribeira Grande, the visitor will be able to contemplate a fantastic view over the coastal area. It is also possible to see the vast fields filled with tea plants, the only ones in Europe. This trail starts at the centre of a small place on the north side of the island called Ribeira Funda, and takes about 3 hours to complete. The walk starts in an open area, becoming a path with dense vegetation, mainly composed of incense (Pittosporum undulatum) and Conteiras (Hedychium gardnerianum).
The trail leads to some old water mills that were used to transform wheat and corn into flour, used in bread making, and passing by several streams until you reach a viewpoint, where you can see the next stop: Praia da Viola. Praia da Viola is a small and quiet beach with sand and thick stones, flanked by a cliff with several water springs. If the ocean is calm, it is possible to take a quick swim. In the middle of the hidden beach, there is a path that leads to the end of the trail, in the small parish of Maia. Some places are very narrow and steep, and can also be slippery.
On the way back to Ponta Delgada, passing by the north coast of the island, it is still time to stop at the oldest tea factory of São Miguel, Gorreana tea factory for a tea tasting and stop at Caldeira Velha, a place in the mountain of Lagoa do Fogo where it is possible to take a bath in the relaxing warm waters. Back on the road, passing through Ribeira Grande before crossing the south coast and after a short trip on the south coast, the activity ends with the arrival to Ponta Delgada.
