Pedestrian Trail Serra do Topo / Fajã dos Vimes

Duration: 3:00 hours, approximately

Distance: 5 Km

Difficulty: Average

Type of course: Linear

Description:

The trail starts at an altitude of almost 700 meters together with the wind turbines and extends to sea level on the south coast of the island. Like other trails, it begins with the contrast of green landscapes dyed blue by the hydrangeas (in its flowering season) and the blue of the sea.

The trail was used by the ancient inhabitants of Fajã, to have access to the cattle milking. They did it twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon to collect milk from the cows.

The route has a steep descent, almost all of it in staircase with about 1250 steps worked in stone. Here it is advisable to use sticks and appropriate footwear, as in certain areas it can be muddy and slippery. It has a very open beginning to the landscapes around it and then it closes in its own flora, only opening again when reaching the Fajã dos Vimes road.

Before finishing the tour, you will pass by the old road in Europe accompanied by a visit to the Nunes coffee plantation and the Casa de Artesanato, where the famous high point bedspreads are produced on wooden hand looms.

Duration: 5:00 hours, approximately

Distance: 10Km

Difficulty: Average

Type of course: Linear

Description:

The trail Serra do Topo/Fajã da Caldeira Santo Cristo/ Fajã dos Cubres is one of the most known and famous routes not only for the beauty of these majestic Fajãs with lagoons inside, but also for their history of the great 1980 earthquake and the isolation that the very few permanent inhabitants face and resist the bad weather of these Fajãs.

It is a trail that begins flanked by hydrangeas, flowers that are in bloom from late spring to late summer. Along the trail it is possible to observe endemic species such as heather, cedar, mountain grape, holly, moss, among other species.

Along the way down, it is possible to visit a waterfall - the Caldeira de Cima waterfall.

In Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo there is a lagoon and it is considered the ex-libris of the island, not only for its beauty, but also for being the cradle of the famous Amêijoas de São Jorge, unique in the Azores.

In this place it is possible to visit the Interpretation Center of that Fajã, take a bath and enjoy a drink or even taste the local gastronomic delicacy - the Clams of the Caldeira de Santo Cristo.

The route continues through other Fajãs to Fajã dos Cubres. In this Fajã, you can also enjoy its lagoon and observe some specimens of marine and migratory birds, as well as the surrounding flora, and also enjoy a drink in the local bar, near the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Along the way, there is contact with endemic species and intact ecosystems, which, because it is not a tourist area, becomes a true natural beauty.

It is a trail very closed in vegetation and sidewalks that extend like tunnels excavated between the large trees of incense and heather. This trail later intersects with the official trail of Fajã da Caldeira de Cima, and it is possible to visit its waterfall.

The route continues to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo with its lagoon in the interior where the famous São Jorge Clams, unique in the Azores, are found.

In this place it is possible to visit the Interpretation Center of that Fajã, take a bath and enjoy a drink or even taste the local gastronomic delicacy - the Clams of Fajã of Caldeira de Santo Cristo.

The route continues through other fajãs to Fajã dos Cubres. In this Fajã, you can enjoy its lagoon and observe some specimens of marine and migratory birds, as well as the surrounding flora, and also enjoy a drink in the local bar, near the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Small Northern Walking Trail

Duration: 05:00 hours, approximately

Distance: 11Km

Difficulty: Average

Type of course: Circular

Description:

The Trilho do Norte Pequeno (KM 0) is a network of trails in the Parish of Norte Pequeno to the north of São Jorge Island and the few circular routes.

They are a set of 5 trails that have the same starting point, which is near the parish council of this locality and each one ends in a fajã - Fajã do Mero, Funduras, Penedia, Pontas and Neca.

In the passage through these fajãs, one can see that the geomorphology of each one has distinct landscape characteristics. In some points of this route, especially in Fajã do Mero, one can see an old "thread" that was used to transport the incense wood cut in the high rocks of that place.
